Adult ECMO: Emerging Trends & Resources
Nashville, TN - April 16, 2010
8.15 am to 5.30 pm (cst)
Why offer this seminar?
- The H1N1 flu pandemic has highlighted the benefits of ECMO for certain patient populations.
- The increasing use of ECMO for Adults and it’s general lack of availability was brought to light during the last few months.
- The recent publication of the CESAR trial has provided useful data indicating ECMO is beneficial in Adult Respiratory Failure patients.
- For ECMO to be most beneficial it must be implemented within the first 3-7 days of severe illness requiring high-pressure ventilation.
- Even after the H1N1 flu threat has passed, there will still be a subset of Adult patients that can benefit from ECMO. i.e. Trauma, Pulmonary Embolism, ARDS, Respiratory Failure/Pneumonia, Cardiac Failure etc.
- ECMO Technologies have improved to the point that we can provide safe ECMO support following ELSO guidelines without the cumbersome equipment and processes involved in the traditional ECMO programs.
Who should attend?
If your institution has or is considering the ability to provide Adult ECMO support you need to attend this seminar. We will address all the issues you need to consider in establishing an Adult ECMO Program that meets ELSO standards. This seminar will also help you decide whether you really need your own Adult ECMO program or whether your patients would be better served by preparing your health care team to initiate ECMO support and then transfer the patient to an established ELSO ECMO Center.
This seminar would be of most benefit to Hospital Administrators, Intensive Care Physicians, Nurse Managers and Perfusionists of Institutions considering Adult ECMO support for their patients.
Seminar Agenda
This is a one-day seminar designed to provide you with everything you need to consider to provide safe Adult ECMO care.
Keynote Speaker - Dr. Robert H. Bartlett M.D.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Robert H. Bartlett M.D., Professor of Surgery Emeritus at University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Bartlett is best known for developing the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, or ECMO, a modified heart-lung machine used around the world for patients with acute heart or lung failure. It is used in intensive care units to circulate and oxygenate the blood of those close to death due to trauma, burns, infection or organ failure.
Dr. Bartlett will be sharing information regarding the history of ECMO, Adult candidates for ECMO, Adult ECMO Physiology, and why and how to set up an adult ECMO program. He will also share some tips regarding managing patients before and during ECMO.
Key topics will include:
- What is ECMO and Why Set Up An Adult ECMO Program?
- Physiology and Management of ARDS Before and During ECMO
- How to establish a NON-Traditional ECMO Program following ELSO guidelines
- Strategies to Avoid ECMO and When to Abandon Them
